Are Thieves Getting Smarter or Lazier?
One of our team members was telling me about a new strategy used by thieves. I was so amazed by what these losers were doing, I just had to share it.
Thieves are now using your portable GPS system against you. Here’s what happens:
They cruise the parking lots of events that will last 2-4 hours, in search of vehicles with portable GPS units on the dash or suctioned to the windshield. Next, they break-in and steal the GPS unit, looking for a prize that has a value far greater than the gps unit itself. The prize, your home address, conveniently stored in the unit as HOME. Oh, I forgot to mention, they also take your garage door opener.
How convenient, they have your home address, know about how long you’re going to be gone, and can park in your garage while ransacking your house.
Normally, I would call this kind of ingenuity downright intelligent, but given how it’s put to use, it can only fall in the category of REALLY LAZY! I just hope we aren’t asked to feel sorry for this group when obesity sets in due to the effects of technology.
Some things to remember if you own a portable GPS.
- Delete your home address. Do you have your home address in your GPS for the fun of it or because you don’t know where you live? If it’s just for fun, use a point of interest close to your home instead.
- Enable password protection. Many GPS units allow you to enable security on the unit. When enabled, it requires the user to enter a password before accessing or using the unit.
- Don’t leave the GPS unit in view while parked. It only takes a few extra seconds to store it in the glove box or center console.
Thanks for reading and keep it FUN!
