Cold Weather and Your Tires.

Tire_pressure_gaugeThe weather has quickly changed from warm to cold and it’s time to consider how the weather may affect your car, particularly, your tires. Rapid changes in temperature can cause problems with your tire pressure and affect the performance and safety of your tires.

Temperatures between summer and winter can vary over 100 degrees. As the air temperature changes it results in a gain or loss of air pressure in your tires. For every 10 degrees in temperature change, the air pressure in your tires will change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). As temperatures rise, air pressure increases; as the temperature falls, air pressure decreases. The extremes of our climate can really put your tires to the test.

The relationship of air temperature to air pressure may explain why your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light comes on when it’s 25 degrees below zero. Properly inflated tires at 70 degrees will be over 9 psi low when the temperature dips to minus 25 degrees. In most cases, that’s more than enough change for the little TPMS warning light on your dash to start flashing.

Proper tire inflation is extremely important for safety, traction, longevity, and fuel economy. With winter here it is important to check your tires for proper inflation.
